KATHMANDU:- The Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) staged separate sit-ins in front of embassies of India and China in Kathmandu demanding peace between the two neighbours.

On June 16, a clash occurred between forces of India and China in a disputed border area, leading to many casualties, it has been said. It is sad that two giants of South Asia were ‘heading to a war’ instead of becoming an example of peace, the Society said such act would pose a risk to peace of the region and the entire world.

The Society has demanded an end to clashes at the border between India and China and a solution to the problems through talks.

The protest was joined by the Society’s founding president Krishna Pahari, founding member Krishna Kandel, central secretary Bal Bahadur Gaha Magar, central member Namrata Kharel and President Uttam Pudasaini among others.
The protestors had placards reading ‘stop war’, ‘promote peace’, ‘peace, not war’.

– HURPES concerned over letting off powerful ones in Lalita land scam

Published On:  February 7, 2020 08:30 PM NPT By: RSS

KATHMANDU, Feb 7: The Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) has expressed severe concern over letting off those in the main responsibility in connection with the Lalita Niwas land scam.

The HURPES said it was unfortunate to spare those in power despite filing corruption case against 175 persons including former Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

HURPES’ attention was drawn seriously towards Nepali Congress’ stand that filing case against its Vice Chairman Gachhadar was ill-intended and its decision to protest it by mobilizing sister organizations, HURPES Chairman Uttam Pudashaini stated in the press release.

“The double standard maintained by the constitutional body CIAA in the Baluwatar land scam was quite regrettable,” Pudashaini added in the statement.

It further said it was equally condemnable on the parts of both the ruling and the opposition parties to try to condone those accused of corruption.

– Pahadi calls for bringing former two PM under purview of law in Lalita Niwas land grab scam

Published On:  February 8, 2020 06:45 PM NPT By: RSS

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Human rights activist Krishna Pahadi has said corrupt behaviours of leaders, opportunity available to them to escape punishment and impunity have increased a threat to the democratic republic established after a people’s great sacrifice and enthusiasm.

Pahadi who is also the founding president of Human Rights and Peace Society warned about this through a press meet here today.

The human rights leader claimed that the involvement of former Prime Ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Dr Baburam Bhattarai in the Baluwataar land procurement scam had become crustal clear.

According to him, leader Nepal has a special contribution to the democratic movements at home and Dr Bhattarai is accredited for his role in the establishment of republic, but the same contribution should not be the basis of exemption for them.

The civil rights leader demanded the government include the both in the prosecution process and ensure a judicial treatment on the case. He went on to say that all should accept a decision to be taken by an ‘independent judiciary’ in regard with a case filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) against 175 people including former Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar who are alleged of their involvement in the scam.

“It is inappropriate for that the Nepali Congress to obstruct the House and send its sister organisations to the street against the CIAA move against the party leader,” he said. “However, I welcome the party if it is trying to put a pressure peacefully to bring the former prime minister duo ( Nepal and Dr Bhattarai) under a purview of law ,” he said, speaking of the possibility of cooperation from civil society in such non-violent and constructive pressure.

MoFA’s Attention Drawn To Ratify Rome Statue

KATHMANDU: The team of the Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) has drawn the attention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali to immediately ratify the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute.
In the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singha Durbar today, Society’s President Uttam Pudasaini-led team demanded Nepal’s endorsement of the Statute at the earliest.
In response, Minister Gyawali said that the positive environment was being created lately for the same and there was no doubt that Nepal would not uphold the values of the Statute, HURPES President Pudasaini quoted Minister Gyawali as saying.
Furthermore, the Minister asked the Society to make more efforts towards convincing the progresses and developments following the ratification of the Statute.
Rome Statute was adopted on July 17, 1998 which is the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court which was set up to deal with the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crime.
HURPES has been pressing the Nepal government for ratification of the Statute since 21 years. Although the government has responded positively towards this issue, no concrete action has been taken to this end.
HURPES is a NGO that focuses on non-violence, peace, human rights and democracy. It was founded on June 1, 1996.

Civil society leaders demonstrate against deal with Raut

Civil society leaders stage a demonstration against the government-CK Raut agreement, in Kathmandu, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Kathmandu, March 13

A group of civil society leaders on Wednesday staged a protest in Kathmandu against a recent agreement that the government signed with Madheshi politician CK Raut.

Policed interfered in the protest and detained the demonstrators including Krishna Pahadi.

They had launched the demonstration in front of the southern entrance of Singhadarbar, the main administrative complex of the country.

The demonstrators argued that the deal was  ‘criminal’ in nature and it jeopardised the country’s sovereignty as Raut supporters began interpreting as the government’s agreement to hold a consensus on whether to separate the Madhesh region from Nepal.

They, however, maintained that the deal should be welcomed if it really ended the secessionist movement.
