Major Activities (1998 - 1999)

  • May 11,1998. Tendering of a petition at the Indian Embassy against nuclear testing by India.
  • May 28, 1998. A "draw-attention" program against nuclear testing by India, was organized during a visit from the Indian president, R.K. Narayan. Many HRO members including HURPES members were arrested from Maitighar Kathmandu and released later the same day.
  • May 29, 1998. At the initiation of HURPES and with the support of other HROs, a sit-in was organized in front of the Pakistani Embassy against the nuclear test conducted by Pakistan.
  • June 5-6, 1998. The first national council meeting of HURPES took place in Kathmandu.
  • July 17, 1998. A talk program was organized  "Concept of Rule of Law and Human Rights Situation". In the context of the  SAARC summit, a signature campaign was held on 22-23 July 1998 in Kathmandu for nuclear disarmament and the release of the Prisoner of Conscience of Bhutan, Tek Nath Rijal.
  •  24 July 1998.  A talk program "Context: SAARC Summit: Peace, Justice and Freedom", was held.
  •  26 July 1998.  A seminar was held on the "Responsibility of SAARC for the Promotion of Peace and Human Rights in South Asia".
  • Signatures were collected for the SAARC summit and were handed over to the ambassadors and deputy chief of mission of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The signatures were submitted to the Prime Minister's office of Nepal.
  • July 29-30,1998. Members of HURPES fasted for 24 hours against nuclear arms race in South Asia.
  • September 15, 1998. A talk program was organized  in Kathmandu on the occasion of international day of peace.
  • October 18, 1998. The first show of the street drama "Half Sky" was performed as a part of human rights and peace drama tour in Basantapur Kathmandu.
  • October 24, 1998. A talk program was held on "The Role of UN for World Peace".
  •  25 October 1998 to 23 November 1998, street drama "Half Sky" was performed in 40 districts of the country. During the trip, 30 corner meetings and street seminars were also held.
  •  October-November 1998. Talk programs on human rights and peace issues were held in eight districts at the initiation of the HURPES district committees. In five other districts, talk programs were held by district committees, in collaboration with other local organizations.
  • December 1- 2 1998. Around 5000 signatures collected in Kathmandu, calling for the immediate formation of National Human Rights Commission and  were handed over to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on 3 December 1998.
  • December 4, 1998. A talk program was held on "50 Years of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Nepal."
  • December 6-9, 1998. Four corner meetings were held in Kathmandu.
  • December 10, 1998. A peace rally and a talk program were held on the occasion of Human Rights Day.
  • December 31 1998.  A talk program "21st Century: Human Rights and Peace" was held.
  • March 17, 1999. A talk program on "The Role of Civil Society and Challenges for the Protection of Human Rights", was held.
  • February to March 1999. Organized 17 special symposia on "Responsibilities of Different Institutions for Free and Fair Election" in 17 districts in Nepal.
  • A press conference was held to highlight the election observation plan of HUPRES in 55 districts in Nepal, after the Election Commission of Nepal recognized HURPES to act as the national election observer.
  • April 25, 1999. Organized four regional training workshops for national election observers of HURPES.
  • May 1999. Conducted national election observation in 55 districts mobilizing 186 national election observers in the first and second phase parliamentary elections. The districts observed  included the ones affected by violence. At the invitation of UNDP, held three briefing sessions to international election observers' team.
  • May 9, 1999. Press conference held in Kathmandu to release the preliminary report of the first phase election observation.
  • June 2,1999. Organized a talk program "Peace is Our Right" to observe HURPES anniversary.
  • June 11 through until the last week in July 1999. Organized human rights seminar against torture in 25 districts of the country. There were more than 1200 participants, including 100 police officers.
  • Imparted  two training  to government attorneys. 
  • HURPES members were addressed  and participated  in several dozen programs organized by other  organizations including Human Rights and Foreign affairs committee of Parliament .
  • Besides these, the district committees of HURPES have organized different programs addressing various aspects of organizational concerns.
  • Held meetings with the Prime Minister, Several Ministers , Ambassadors of different countries in Nepal .
  • Three edition of Peace journals were published

Joint Activities (1998 - 1999)

  1. August - September 1998. One month long program was launched by 11 human rights organizations of Nepal, including HURPES, it focused on the formation of National Human Rights Commission and other human rights issues. The programs included- seven corner speeches, 10 demonstrations and sit-in, three press conferences.
  2. October 16, 1998. Organized a seminar in Kathmandu  focusing on "Current Situation of Human Rights: the Challenges and Responsibilities."
  3. March 11 and March 16, 1999. Organized two separate demonstrations to ask all those concerned to give up violence and stop the killings.
